There’s a lot to think about when you’re getting ready to start music lessons and many parents wonder if their student needs an instrument to start music lessons. The short answer is, yes! Be sure to let us know if you have additional questions by sending us a quick email!
The short answer is yes: Here’s why!
Practice
If you have your own instrument, you can play and practice even when your instructor is not present. Since the best way to improve is to practice daily, it’s pretty much a no-brainer. Having our own instrument sets us up for success. Your instructor will be so impressed at your next lesson when you’ve worked hard throughout the week and can show them what you learned!
Size
Some instruments should be fitted to the student. Guitars come in two general sizes, while violins are available in nine! Let us know if you need help figuring out which size is best for your student.
Excitement
Starting music lessons is an exciting endeavor, and having your very own instrument adds to the excitement. Receiving a guitar during the holidays or a keyboard for your birthday can really kick start the desire to work hard during lessons.
Student/Teacher Duets
Most students enjoy duets and/or call and response activities with their teacher. These activities encourage playing with a steady beat, improvising, and help beginning students feel like they are playing more complex songs. Let’s not forget to mention they are just plain fun!
Hygiene
Wind instruments require mouthpieces that should not be shared for health and sanitary reasons. And quite frankly, with many little hands touching a guitar or other hand held instrument, you can imagine the germs your might find. Keyboard instruments tolerate a Clorox wipe well, but wooden instruments should be cleaned with milder products.
Finding the right way to teach your child responsibility can be difficult. Why not try a musical instrument? It’s important for them to be put set up correctly in preparation for practice and they should be put in a safe place (often a case) after each practice session. Setting aside time to practice everyday is also a great way to encourage time management skills.
